The Koutoubia

The Koutoubia Mosque is probably Morocco's most famous, ahead of the Kairaouine and Hassan II. It gives its name to the most popular brand of Halal charcuterie.
It is of Almohad origin started soon after their conquest of Marrakesh in1150 and finished around 1190.Excavations show that it was once much bigger than its present size and can be seen next to the current building The minaret is the archetype on which all subsequent moroccan minarets are fashioned and  together with the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville is one of the three great towers of this dynasty. .The defining feature is the ratio of height to width of 5:1. This square tower is copied in minarets throughout the country setting moroccan architecture apart from Islamic architecture of the middle east.
It is stunning when lit up at night and a great landmark being visible from much of the city. This is particularly useful for tourists as it is situated just outside the Djemaa al Faa.
